When did you decide to become [fame4. jpg] a makeup artist? I always loved makeup but didn’t realize in the small town I grew up in that make-up artists can work outside of department stores. My love for fashion started me out working at women’s fashion magazines. While on photo shoots, I realized the world of a freelance makeup artist.

What was your biggest break as a professional makeup artist? My biggest break was definitely when I joined my agency, Artists by Timothy Priano. When I pursued my make-up career on my own, it took a lot of ambition and discipline. I worked for a year and half just building my book and keeping track of every person I met in the industry. I would have entire days devoted to contacting people and doing my own billing. Now that I am a part of Artists, I have more opportunities.

What is your makeup philosophy? I love to use lots of color as long as it is done in a sophisticated way that works for the individual. Why not use teal eyeliner around the eye in a way that looks amazing but doesn’t shout out, “eyeliner?” Incorporating color into your make-up makes a beautiful and interesting statement. It is also important to achieve amazing skin with application (blend, blend) and the use of high quality products.

What have been some of your most memorable celebrity collaborations? Recently I worked with Elizabeth Shue (Karate Kid, Cocktail) whom I though was so cool when I was a teenager. Also working with Christy Brinkley was one of those moments when I couldn’t believe it was really happening. I never imagined in my wildest dreams I’d be meeting and beautifying these faces I grew up admiring.

You were an assistant to the Editor In Chief at Marie Claire and worked for Glamour. How does your experience working in fashion influence your makeup style today? I really believe that understanding fashion is an integral part of understanding beauty. Fame4. jpg it goes hand in hand. As a make-up artist, you can’t just think about the make-up, colors and textures of the clothes need to be incorporated when thinking about bigger picture.

What are some of the makeup products every girl should carry in her purse? Bigelow lip gloss, Dermalogica Mulivitamin Powerfirm, YSL Touche Eclat, Tarte Cheek Stain, Dior Show mascara, Giorgio Armani Foundation and Benefit Dallas Blush

What would be your dream makeup assignment? I would love to work with an iconic actress such as Sophia Loren or Catherine Deneuve.

What do you love most about being a makeup artist? I absolutely love being a beauty expert. People trust me to make them look and feel their best. The transformation is always different depending on the person and the evolution of makeup application is such a fascinating process for me.

What city in the world do you find most inspirational? I love Shanghai. I am half Chinese, half British and it is a bustling metropolis mixed with colonial elements. In many ways it reminds me of New York with all of the sophistication and amazing restaurants and shops yet at the same time it is very Eastern and exotic.

How do you define your own personal style? I tend to lean towards basics with a twist somewhere. My palette is pretty neutral meaning black, grey, white fame4. jpg, cream and I’ll throw in some burgundy and navy sometimes. I am much more into playing with silhouettes than wearing a loud print or color.

What’s next for Anthea? I hope to do what I do for a long, long time to come. I enjoy the process of taking on new assignments and challenges every day. I just hope to keep doing fame4. jpg more and more fashion and celebrity work and continue to grow and be inspired by my craft.

What other passions do you have besides makeup? I LOVE to cook! Also, I really enjoy cycling around New York, which I find to be one of the best ways to get around and see the city. Nature is a huge passion of mine and I love being outdoors and doing any kind of activity: kayaking, white water rafting, hiking or swimming.
