I used to love playing with my Barbie dolls when I was a little girl. Also I was always been interested in art and painting.

How did you get your first big break as a makeup artist?
When I was called to do makeup for Linda Carter, the original wonder woman.

What is your makeup philosophy?
Each face is a unique piece of art.

What have been some of your most memorable collaborations?
I really enjoyed working with Brittany Murphy. She is really like the characters she plays in movies, very funny, and friendly. I also love doing makeup for males on sit down comedies on TV Land.

What is your favorite type of makeup assignment: backstage runway, print, or celebs?
Print is my favorite. You get time to plan out and create the makeup for the print assignment. You get to be on locations. I like working backstage as well, but it requires you to be fast.

What is the key for achieving long term success and popularity as a makeup artist?
Personality is the most important thing in developing good working relations with your clients. You want to make sure that the people you work with remember you as a fun and pleasant person to work with. No matter how talented you are, your personality is what makes an imprint in people’s mind.

What makeup style are you best known?
Fashion. I’m one of the few makeup artists in Los Angeles who does makeup for fashion and runway.

Which products we would always find in your makeup bag?
Too Faced Cosmetics. I just love every product from Too Faced. My favorites are: Eye Shadow Liquifier, Lash Injection, and Lip Injection. Too Faced foundations are also fabulous. The only thing I use from Stila is their matt eye shadows. But I’m sure Too Faced will soon catch up. I have no doubt.

What are some of your top tips for getting fresh and flawless complexion?
No matter what age you are, you should always use a moisturizer. I like JASON Organics skincare products, such as: Ester-C Crème, and Ester-C Serum Anti-Aging Therapy. I also like Burt’s Bees moisturizers. I believe dry skin leads to an oily skin. Once my clients take my advice, they see improvement with their complexion. Foundation with sunscreen is also important. Some people may not think this way, but the right foundation actually protects your skin from outside factors like: pollution and dirt.

What do you enjoy most about being a makeup artist?
Working with people and making people laugh. I have a background in acting and singing, and I even studied opera. So I like interacting with people, and being in front of people. I also enjoy how every makeup assignment allows me to create a new work of art. Every makeup assignment is unique.

What other passions do you have besides making faces beautiful?
I love singing, acting, and I play basketball.

What projects are you currently working on?
I’m doing the next campaign for (I believe its fall 2008) for Level99usa Couture. I was also shooting April 4th at Smashbox Studios. In the meantime I’m shooting an editorial for an undisclosed magazine involving Fairies.

  1. Thanks for this great interview! As a freelance makeup artist in the DC market, I can appreciate articles like this one. Victoria was spot on about her view on what it takes to be a successful makeup artist. People come away from an experience makeup with more than just product on their faces…part of the look achieved is a direct result of interaction with the MUA present and if that isn’t a good experience, the talent will be thrown off kilter.

  2. I really love your tips Victoria! You totally rock the house. Keep it coming girl.
